Giza & Mit Rihana

Head of Ramses II
This really is Ramses, but almost every monument in Egypt has his name on it somewhere. Either it was built at his command, or he liked it enough to have the original pharoah's name chiseled off and replaced with his own cartouche. Maybe that's why he's known as Ramses the Great.

It's the desert, really
Yeah, it's pretty barren. That's the tip of the Step pyramid in the background. Imagine working out here when it's 105 degrees.

The Step Pyramid
This is the first pyramid ever built. It never had smooth sides. There are over 100 pyramids in Egypt today.

The Great Pyramid
This shot was taken from the ledge where you enter the pyramid and begin the climb up toward the burial chamber. I'd guess the ledge is about a quarter of the way to the top.

An intrepid pyramid climber
This is me after I climbed a 3 feet by 3 feet shaft inside the Great Pyramid to reach the burial chamber. They say it's about three hundred steps, only it's a ramp and not steps. It's REALLY hot inside a pyramid, and there's not much oxygen.

The archetypal photo
Everybody takes this picture. I think it's a law or something.
