Witches

A grassroots effort is underway to save a 354-year-old tavern in Danvers that played a significant role in the Salem Witch Trials and is currently in a state of severe disrepair and in danger of being demolished.

The fear of witchcraft led to centuries of persecution and executions across Europe. While there were an estimated 500 executions in England, and between 3,000 and 4,000 killings in Scotland, only five people were hanged for witchcraft in Wales.

Early modern Wales was unique in its outlook on witchcraft. Distinct elements of Welsh culture, including superstition and religion, halted the witch trials seen across the rest of Britain and Europe.

On a moonlit night in October, Carol Sobczak set up candles, cake, and other supplies on an altar at her Long Island home for a Wiccan ritual. Her students – three women in their late 20s and early 30s – gathered in her backyard for their weekly meeting to learn and practice witchcraft.

“This is our religion…it makes us feel good and whole and joyful,” Sobczak, 61, said. “That's, I think, what religion is supposed to do.”

Pagans

The Green Man is, unsurprisingly, a male figure, who appears as a synthesis of human and plant, usually having a human-like face with foliage emerging in the form of hair and a beard, or sprouting from his mouth or nostrils.

Whilst representations of the Green Man appear carved and painted in artworks dating from around the 12th century onwards, his identity is more of a modern construction.

We know very little about Cernunnos from ancient times. His name is recorded only once, on the Pillar of the Boatman, a Latin and Gaulish sculpture near Paris that dates to the early first century CE. Many of us believe it is Cernunnos who is depicted on the Gundestrup Cauldron, but we have no way to know for sure.

This lack of history and lore has done nothing to keep Cernunnos from becoming one of the most popular deities in modern Paganism.

Think about this for a minute. If you don’t know what’s in the Bible, you can’t defend yourself when radicals try to use it against you. This is something my elder, the Rev. Foxxy (Sher) Pullen has said so many times to her students.

The West Country is better known for Poldark’s smoulder than the fires of Paganism. But, as a local Heathen priest, I can assure you that the Pagan revival down here is in full swing. Just last week, a builder working next door to me announced that he was a Druid, while a man I hired to fit some floorboards revealed that he, like me, worships the Germanic gods of our Anglo-Saxon ancestors.

I’m a Witch and I love my brain, but it is weird (as well as wyrd) in that it works differently to most other brains. To put it bluntly, I have Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder, more commonly known as ADHD.

The New York-based designer carries small and large crystals in her bags wherever she goes and travels with a tarot deck at all times that she pulls from daily. She taught herself tarot by using the app Labyrinthos and sees the psychic Dante Sabatino, otherwise known as Tarot by Dante, annually.

A Michigan woman won a $500,000 lottery prize the same day as Tarot cards said she was about to come into some money.

A 59-year-old woman from Genesee County bought a 50X Wild Time instant game ticket at the BP gas station on West Thompson Road in Fenton.

“I have always told the people in my life that I was going to win the lottery one day,” she said. “Once a week, I purchase a few instant games, and I usually always buy them from the same store.”

She said she was on her way to a Tarot reading when she stopped at a different store to buy some tickets.

Eclipse Revisited

Sköll had caught Sunna; Fvni Lusa had begun his meal; Apep’s gaze had overwhelmed mighty Ra. In town, the church bells tolled, sounding that it was two o’clock or the end of the world. My father complained that he couldn’t see the corona through his eclipse glasses, and I told him they weren’t useful anymore. We only need protection from light; we can look upon darkness directly.

For some who practice alternative forms of spirituality, including those who identify as witches, a total solar eclipse like the one that will pass over parts of southeastern Canada Monday is more than just an interesting phenomenon: it can be a sacred experience rich with meaning.

Davidson, who is a Roman Catholic, asserts that our current era is fraught with anxiety, as indicated by the erosion of long-held certainties, cherished beliefs, and social cohesion. He cautions against optimism, noting a prevalent complacency towards our Christian heritage, upon which America was founded. However, he laments the inevitable decline of this Christian culture, foreseeing its replacement by a despotic regime intertwined with a new, more virulent form of paganism rooted in antipathy towards Christianity.

A collection of eleven articles about how witches and witchcraft were depicted in the Middle Ages. Many of the articles focus on the connections between women and magic and how this gradually troubled medieval society.
